The questions we get asked most on this kind of job.
Quartz or granite?
Quartz is non-porous, needs no sealing and is consistent slab to slab. Granite is natural, so every slab is different and it wants sealing now and then — many people choose it for exactly that variation. Neither is the better answer in general; it depends on the room and how you cook.
Will exterior stone survive New England winters?
It will if it is built for it. Proper base preparation and drainage are what stop frost heave from lifting steps and walkways — the part below grade matters more than the stone you can see.
Can you repair existing stone steps?
Usually yes. Repointing, resetting loose treads and rebuilding a failing section is common work and costs a fraction of a full replacement.
