Tile, step by step

How a tile floor
actually goes down.

Most of what decides whether a tile floor lasts is buried by the time you see it. This is the order it happens in — and why the cut tiles end up at the walls instead of in the middle of the room.

  1. Chalk the centre lines
  2. Comb the thinset
  3. Set from the centre out
  4. Clip the plane flat
  5. Grout and clean back
  6. Seal and hand over

The standard

What happens
under the tile.

Anyone can say craftsmanship. These are the four things we do before anything visible goes on, photographed while they were happening — so you can check the claim instead of taking it.

If a quote you are comparing does not mention the substrate, the membrane or the base, that work is either not costed or not planned. Ask.

  1. Curbless marble shower with a built-in bench and recessed niche, built over a waterproofed and sloped pan

    01

    Waterproofed before it is tiled

Tile and grout are not waterproof on their own. Every wet area gets a proper membrane and a sloped pan before a single tile goes up. It is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether the room lasts fifteen years or three.

  2. White hexagon mosaic floor with a black accent pattern running true to a crisply tiled curb

    02

Laid out dry, before any thinset

Centre lines get set and the run gets dry-laid first, so the cuts land where they should and a pattern does not die in a corner. A layout a few millimetres out at one end of a wall is obvious by the other end.

  3. Marble shower walls mid-installation with levelling clips still in place holding the tiles on one plane

    03

Held flat across the whole plane

Levelling clips stay in until the thinset cures, so the surface comes out as one plane instead of a field of edges. Lippage you can feel with a fingertip is lippage you will feel forever.

  4. Bluestone patio being set to line with spacers and a level over a prepared base

    04

Built for a New England winter

Outside, the part below grade matters more than the stone you can see. Base preparation and drainage are what stop frost heave lifting steps and walkways by the second spring.

How it works

No surprises,
start to finish.

Four commitments that hold on every job, and the four stages every job runs through.

  • A transparent estimate

Itemized, in writing, and explained. You know what you are paying for before anything starts.

  • A realistic timeline

We tell you how long it will actually take, and we tell you early when something moves.

  • Updates as it runs

You are never left wondering what is happening in your own house.

  • 3D previews when they help

On tricky layouts we show you the finished room first. Changing your mind on a screen is free.

  1. We come out and measure

Free visit, no obligation. We look at the room, check what is under the surface, and talk through what you want. Guessing at square footage over the phone is how estimates end up wrong.

  2. You get it in writing

An itemized estimate and a realistic schedule — not an optimistic one written to win the job. If we think something is a bad idea, we say so before you have paid for it.

  3. We build it

Same crew every day. The area gets sealed off, the route in and out protected, and the site cleaned at the end of each day. You hear from us as it moves, and straight away if anything changes.

  4. We walk it with you

We go through the finished room together before we call it done. Anything that is not right gets put right — that is the point of the walkthrough.

  5. A backsplash is usually two days. A full bathroom is typically two to three weeks. You get the real schedule with the estimate.

Where we work

Based in Northborough,
working across MetroWest.

A local crew, not a franchise dispatching from two towns over. That means we get to you quickly and there is no travel charge buried in the estimate.

Questions

Questions worth asking
any contractor.

Short, honest answers. If something here is not clear, call and ask — we would rather explain it now than have it come up mid-job.

How much does a project cost?

It depends on the size of the room, the material and what is behind the walls — so we do not quote from a phone call. We come out, measure, look at the substrate and give you a written estimate with the work itemized. The estimate is free and there is no obligation attached to it.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. PizTile LLC is registered as a Home Improvement Contractor in Massachusetts and carries insurance. We are happy to send the paperwork before you commit to anything — you should ask any contractor for it.

How long will my project take?

A backsplash is usually two days. A full bathroom is typically two to three weeks. Flooring depends on square footage and whether the subfloor needs work. You get a realistic schedule with the estimate — not an optimistic one designed to win the job.

How much mess will there be?

Demolition makes dust, there is no way around it. What we control is where it goes: we seal the work area, protect the floors along the route in and out, and clean up at the end of every day. You should be able to live normally in the rest of the house.

Do you give updates while the work is running?

Yes. You hear from us as the job moves, and immediately if something changes — a surprise behind a wall, a delayed material, a schedule shift. Finding out late is what turns a small problem into a bad experience.

Can I see what it will look like first?

On projects where a layout decision is hard to picture, we will put together a 3D preview so you can see the tile pattern and the finished room before we start. It is much cheaper to change your mind on a screen than on a wall.

Which towns do you cover?

We are based in Northborough and work regularly in Shrewsbury, Westborough and Berlin, plus the surrounding MetroWest and Worcester County towns. If you are nearby and not on the list, just ask.

Do you supply the tile and materials?

Whichever you prefer. Most clients choose their own tile and we install it. If you would rather not shop, we will walk you through options that suit the room and your budget before you buy anything.
